Fremont County residents are invited to attend Tuesday’s Board of County Commissioners meeting to learn about the health risks from radon, how to test for radon levels in the home, and to receive a free radon test kit.
Fremont County Environmental Health Officer Sid Darden has arranged for representatives from Citizens for Clean Air of Pueblo/PuebloCAREs to give a brief presentation Tuesday morning on radon at the Board of Commissioners’ regular meeting. Darden notes that radon is a naturally occurring, odorless gas that is listed as a Class ‘A’ carcinogen. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer deaths in the U.S. and the leading cause of lung cancer deaths among non-smokers. Darden says the average radon level for Fremont County is 7.3 pCi/L, almost twice the recommended action level of 4.0 pCi/L. The only way to determine if your home has elevated levels of radon is to test for it. If an elevated radon level is detected you can take steps to fix it to protect yourself and your family.
Fremont County residents interested in learning if there are elevated levels of radon in your home are urged to attend the Board of Commissioners meeting Tuesday, February 28th, at 9:30 a.m. in the lower level meeting room of the Fremont County Administration Building. After the brief presentation, Darden and representatives from PuebloCAREs will distribute free radon test kits in the atrium outside the board room.
