Water Status Updates

Fremont County officials and local water districts recently met to discuss the current water outlook and drought response plans for our area. With snowpack levels significantly below median and hot weather ahead, conservation is key for all of us this summer.

Key Takeaways by District:

  • Cañon City: Currently under a Water Shortage Watch. Residents are asked for a voluntary 5-10% reduction in water use. Suggested measures include watering lawns a maximum of 3 days per week and avoiding new sod/grass seed this season.
  • Florence: In Level 1 (Conservation/Education). The city is leading by example by moving park irrigation to nighttime and reducing frequency. Residents are encouraged to check for leaks and limit non-essential use.
  • Penrose & Park Center: Both districts are monitoring storage and moving forward with voluntary curtailment and education efforts.

Why it matters: Early conservation helps protect our direct flow rights and ensures we have enough stored water for the long haul. Let’s work together to be good stewards of our resources!
