I just wanted to start off by saying that as of today, it is one year since I left the Department of Human Services to become the Fremont County Administrator. I loved my work at DHS and the staff there have a very difficult job, but their professionalism and dedication to this very important work is just unbelievable. What I have discovered this past year is the same is true about all the departments and elected official’s offices for Fremont County. I am so appreciative to our County Commissioners for providing me this opportunity to work with our elected officials, department heads and our dedicated employees to help serve this great county we are blessed to live in. I could not be more proud or more appreciative of the opportunity I get every day to observe first-hand, the remarkable talents and skills that our 370 employees and elected officials bring to the office every day, to ensure the important work of the county is being accomplished. This is my 39th year of working in a professional public service capacity and I can’t think of any place that I have been employed where I have appreciated the competent work, dedication and pride in a job well done that this group of public servants brings to our community.  Fremont County residents should feel confident that while no one is perfect, the employees work their hardest to provide great customer service and conduct themselves with integrity and great character.

Website Changeover

  • The Fremont County website, previously available at https://www.fremontco.com, will now be available at https://fremontcountyco.gov.
  • The .gov domain designates us as an official, credible government entity.
  • The .gov domain registrar offers additional security, on top of the security we already have.
  • Fremont County will maintain control of the fremontco.com domain.
  • County emails are not changing at this time.
  • The URLs of any third party hosted services – like the Sheriff’s Office page and the public record searches – will not be changing. Those links are still available on the County website, just like before.
  • The content of the website has not changed. All data previously accessible is still accessible.
  • There is a banner on the website indicating the change. This banner will go away at the end of this week.
  • Visiting www.fremontco.com will automatically redirect users to fremontcountyco.gov.
  • The redirect will be staying in place even after the banner is removed. This redirect will be available as-is for at least three months.
  • This means that old bookmarks will still work, but if you have a bookmark saved to a particular page on the county website, you should update it. Updating bookmarks is the only action any Fremont County citizen should need to take because of this change.
  • Search engines like Google and Bing have already been updated with the change. Some other websites that link to ours, however, may still show the old website. If you visit one of these links, the redirect will take you to the right place.

Sheriff Department

We are in the process of replacing the chiller at the Sheriff’s Department. It went out to bid and was awarded to Freedom Mechanical to complete the project. The chiller should arrive this week and the project should be completed by January 31st.  We are excited for our Sheriff Dept staff to have this completed as last summer they endured many days of 95-100 degrees in their office area. This should make for a much more comfortable work environment.

Budget

The 2024 Budget for Fremont County Government was approved at our January 9th meeting by the BOCC. Just go to the Fremont County Website and click on the Administration and Finance tab and then click on Budget and Finance tab. You can then pull up the Final 2024 Budget. I would really like to thank our Finance Director Shawn Sutton, our finance team and all the elected officials and department heads who worked to get the budget finalized.

DHS

DHS will be holding their quarterly PDD for their staff tomorrow January 31st. DHS building will be closed all day on the 31st to allow for staff training all day and will reopen on February 1st to the public.

National Law Enforcement Day

Today is National Law Enforcement Day—This day is dedicated to Peace Officers to express gratitude to the brave men and women who put their lives on the line in this increasingly very difficult and dangerous public service they provide to communities. It is celebrated every year on January 9th. Considering the events over the past weekend in Fremont County, I just wanted to take a moment and thank our Sheriff Department and Canon City and Florence Police Departments for the great work they did to protect our community and to recognize them for their professionalism in dealing with a very dangerous situation.

One of the greatest gifts to any organization is dedicated employees. I want to take this time to express sincere appreciation for our Custodial staff, who for the past month have been working very dilligently to ensure that our new Christmas decorations were completed and put up in our  County Administration building. They worked some very long hours and even days off to make sure that our building would look beautiful for the Christmas season.

Evelyn Campbell
Ken Dear
Indira Lottig
Justin Melton
Jen O’Dell
Brenda Pilcher
John Anderson
Amber ZankBalazs

If you haven’t had a chance to view them at the Administration building, I would suggest you take time to come look at how beautiful they have decorated this building and instilled cheer into the workplace for our staff and the citizens who come into the building to do business.

Again, thanks to all of you for your hard work, we really appreciate each of you.

CCI Conference

The Commissioners, our DHS Director, Barry Acton and I had the opportunity to attend the Colorado Counties annual winter conference in Westminster the past 3 days and I wanted to share one of my biggest takeaways from the conference.

Our 3 Commissioners have such a statewide leadership presence that it made me very proud to be a part of the team that works in this county. Their insight into problem solving and led discussions in the committee meetings and general sessions, verified to me why I was so excited for the opportunity to support our commissioners in the role of County Manager and how fortunate all citizens in Fremont County are to have their experienced voices and state -wide, collaborative leadership capacity to help shape public policy for county government in our state.

Having led several large organizations in the past 20 years, it doesn’t usually take me very long to figure out who has actual influence in an organization and who others are drawn to for guidance and expertise. We as a county are very fortunate to have the County Commissioners and Elected Officials that serve our community
