The 20-foot tall metal sculpture of explorer John C. Fremont stands watch over the entryway to Pathfinder Regional Park along Highway 115 near Florence
The recently completed sculpture of Fremont County’s namesake, John C. Fremont, will be formally dedicated at a ceremony this Saturday, September 14th, at Pathfinder Regional Park along Colorado Highway 115 west of Florence.
The metal sculpture of John C. Fremont, “The Great Pathfinder”, was commissioned by the Fremont County Board of Commissioners and the Cañon City Recreation and Park District as plans were being made earlier this year to install a concrete curb and complete the landscaping in the roundabout at the entrance to Pathfinder Park. District 3 County Commissioner Ed Norden said there was always a desire to erect a piece of art in the center of the roundabout that would be a reflection of Fremont County’s heritage. Norden said when attempts were made to have local artist Sheldon Roberts do a large wood carving for the park, Roberts instead suggested a 20-foot tall metal sculpture of Fremont. Because the Commissioners and Recreation District committed a limit of $5,000 for the artwork, Roberts agreed to raise the balance of the $20,000 needed to complete the project.
The historical sculpture project generated a great deal of community enthusiasm and with cooperation of the local media more than $30,000 was raised for the project.
A concrete pad with two display panels has also been erected next to the roundabout which details the history of John C. Fremont along with the names of principal donors for the project.
The sculpture dedication will begin at 11:00 a.m. this Saturday, September 14th, at Pathfinder Regional Park.
