Fremont County motorists now have another convenient option to renew their motor vehicle registrations and thus avoid long lines at the Motor Vehicle Department. Fremont County Clerk and Recorder Katie Barr says the State of Colorado is now providing her office with a new online system for residents who have simple license plate renewals. Barr said lines in the Motor Vehicle Department get kind of crazy at times and despite rearranging in the office there can still sometimes be a long wait. Barr said the online renewal option should help make everyone’s lives a lot easier.
Motor Vehicle Director Dotty Gardunio said if people need a new set of plates, an address change or renewal cards, it requires proof of insurance and they will still have to come to the office in person. Gardunio said the online transaction must be a perfect in and out renewal and it must be still completed in the renewal grace period. She said motorists who do not renew in the month of expiration or the next month’s 30-day grace period will then have to come into the office.
If a license expires on a Friday or weekend, people can renew online during the evening or weekends, and they will be credited on that day if the internet transaction occurs before midnight.
To access the online application, visit www.Colorado.gov/renewplates or find the link on the Fremont County website, www.fremontco.com.
Forms of payment are Visa, American Express, Master Card, Discover, or an electronic check from a banking account. There is a 2.7 percent service charge fee to use a credit or debit card, or a $1 fee for the electronic check. Gardunio said the fee is minimal compared to late fees people may incur for not renewing on time.
A drop box also is available in the office and express lanes have been set up for those with simple transactions rather than having to wait behind people who have a lot of title work to complete.
The Motor Vehicle Department in the Fremont County Administration Building is open 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
