Commissioners Sign onto Cañon City Source Water Protection

A blueprint that seeks to protect the source water for the City of Cañon City and its residents was agreed upon by the Fremont County Board of Commissioners at their November 26th regular meeting.   The agreement is in the form of a Source Water Protection Area Memorandum of Understanding (MOA) between the city and Fremont County.   City Water Superintendent Bob Hartzman said work on the document has been underway for a number of months.   He said the MOA does not obligate either the city or the county to spend any money.   The agreement says if speci

Fremont County 2014 Budget: Property Taxes Drop Again

The November 26th regular meeting of the Fremont County Board of Commissioners gave the Board and County Budget and Finance Officer Sunny Bryant the opportunity to lay out the revenue and expenditures plan for the county’s 2014 proposed budget.   Bryant detailed the budget highlights during a public hearing on the budget.    Bryant said her biggest concern in preparing her first county budget since being hired earlier this year is that once again the county is proposed to spend more in 2014 than it will collect in revenue.   Bryant said the county h

Commissioners OK Classic Car Showroom & Auto Graveyard Commercial Plan

The Fremont County Board of Commissioners has approved a Commercial Development Plan by two Fountain businessmen to relocate their auto graveyard and classic car showroom to Fremont County.   Michael DeVriendt and Richard Murr have to move their Pikes Peak Motor Company (PPMC) operation from its site along Interstate 25 at Fountain by the first of the year to allow CDOT to rebuild the Fountain I-25 interchange.   PPMC has been busy preparing the former Loader Construction industrial site along Highway 50 west of Penrose to house their business.

Tourism Council Accepting Community Grant Applications

The Fremont County Tourism Council is accepting applications from community organizations for 2014 tourism funding allocations.   Community organizations and non-profit groups that conduct special events which attract tourists and visitors to the area are invited to submit applications for funding assistance.   The Tourism Council by-laws require that at least five percent of Fremont County lodging tax revenues each year be distributed to community groups to support their special events.   The total amount of money to be distributed will be determined by the T

Volunteers Sought to Serve on Fremont County Fair Board

The Fremont County Board of Commissioners is accepting letters of interest from persons willing to serve on the Fremont County Fair Board.   The Fair Board is comprised of 15 to 20 members whose responsibilities include planning and conducting the annual Fremont County Fair.    The terms for six seats on the Fair Board expire on December 31st.   In addition several other seats on the Fair Board are vacant due to some recent resignations.   Each appointment to the Fair Board is for a three year term.
