Commissioners OK Agreement for Combined Dispatch Center

A nearly two year effort to create a single combined communications dispatch center in Fremont County took another step forward at the September 10th meeting of the Board of County Commissioners.   The Commissioners voted unanimously to approve an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) with the City of Cañon City, the City of Florence, and the Cañon City Area Fire Protection District.   While the Board of Commissioners signed onto the formal agreement, it is the Fremont County Sheriff’s Department that is the major player for the county.   Sheriff Jim Beicker said t

Applicants Sought for Vacancy on Heritage Commission

The Fremont County Commissioners are seeking letters of interest to fill two vacancies on the Fremont County Heritage Commission.    One of the members of the Heritage Commission, Kay Ellison, resigned her seat to devote her time to other interests.    Kay represented local museums on the Heritage Commission.   The new appointee would serve out the remainder of this term.  This term expires on January 1, 2015.

The recently completed sculpture of Fremont County’s namesake, John C. Fremont, will be formally dedicated at a ceremony this Saturday, September 14th, at Pathfinder Regional Park along Colorado Highway 115 west of Florence.

Commissioners Vote to Ban Recreational Marijuana Sales

The Fremont County Commissioners listened to three hours of public opinion regarding recreational marijuana Tuesday morning before voting unanimously to ban recreational marijuana sales in Fremont County.   The Commissioners heard a mixture of opinions including remarks from Undersheriff Ty Martin who pointed out that marijuana possession is still a violation of federal law and that Sheriff Jim Beicker believes that the revenue earned will not offset the cost of enforcement.

Commissioners OK Sheriff Sales Tax Question for November Ballot

The Fremont County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously at their August 27th meeting to place a question before the voters on the November ballot in which a one cent sales tax increase is being sought to fund critical needs at the Fremont County Sheriff’s Department.   Sheriff Jim Beicker told the Commissioners that his staff takes a lot of pride in the work they do for the citizens of Fremont County.   He said, “They do an excellent job, but quite frankly, I am running out of ideas and the ability to continue to say yes”.  Sheriff Beicker said citizens have not

Commissioners Approve Certificate Refinancing

The Fremont County Board of Commissioners approved a pair of resolutions at their Tuesday meeting to refinance Certificates of Participation (COPS) along with new COPS financing with an eye towards finding new quarters for Fremont County Public Health.   The first resolution unanimously adopted by the board refinances a 2003 series of certificates and are designed to save the county money with a lower interest rate.   The refinance portion will also stretch out the term of the payback reducing the annual payments over the next several years.    The Commiss
