The Fremont County Tourism Council has extended the deadline for accepting applications for 2014 tourism funding allocations to February 27th. Community organizations and non-profit groups that conduct special events which attract tourists and visitors to the area are invited to submit applications for funding assistance. The Tourism Council by-laws require that at least five percent of Fremont County lodging tax revenues each year be distributed to community groups to support their special events.
Two new members have been named to the Fremont County Planning Commission. The appointments were part of a series of New Years business handled by the Fremont County Board of Commissioners at their January 14th meeting. The Commissioners appointed Gardner Fey of Cañon City and Tina Heffner of Penrose to three year terms on the Planning Commission replacing Joe Lamanna and Mike Krauth, Jr.
The Fremont County Heritage Commission will be launching the program for Local Landmark Designation in January 2014. The focus of this effort will be to identify, inventory and promote the historic nature of many of the buildings, landscapes and sites in our County,
While Fremont County’s 2013 retail sales tax collections continue to lag behind 2012’s numbers and behind 2013 budget estimates, the news from October’s receipts are still better than what may have been expected following the June wildfire at the Royal Gorge Bridge.
The Fremont County Commissioners have formally adopted a 2014 county budget that anticipates spending more money than the county collects in revenue. The board approved three resolutions at their December 9th regular meeting to adopt the budget, levying the property taxes to support expenditures in the budget, and a resolution that appropriates the necessary money needed to finance the various funds contained in the entire budget.
