Applications Sought for Heritage Commission Vacancies

The Fremont County Commissioners are seeking letters of interest to fill two vacancies, created by recent resignations, on the Fremont County Heritage Commission.  One of the charter members of the Heritage Commission, Jon Stone, originally was appointed to serve as the Tourism representative on the commission, and was reappointed in February. His replacement must be affiliated with a tourism-related business or organization, and will serve the remaining two-plus years remaining on that term. Dorothy Cool, who was appointed to her first term in May, was an at-large commission member.

Board of Commissioners OK’s Penrose Rescue Kennel

The Fremont County Commissioners voted 2 to 1 at their August 9th meeting to approve the continued operation of a rescue kennel primarily for German Shorthair dogs in the Penrose area.   Kris Schnobrich was seeking a Special Review Use permit to allow her to continue operating a rescue kennel for up to 25 dogs on property located northwest of 4th and ‘G’ Streets at Penrose.   Schobrich acknowledged at the outset of the public hearing that she had already operated the kennel for several years with full knowledge that she needed a kennel license.  

August Planning Commission Meeting to Focus on Master Plan

The Fremont County Planning Commission will devote their monthly meeting on August 2nd to more discussion on updating the Fremont County Master Plan.   The Planning Commission will also review the most recent language proposed in an amendment to the county’s zoning resolution.    The Planning Commission meets at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 2nd, in the County Commissioners Board Room LL-3 in the Fremont County Administration Building.

Fremont Businesses Qualify for SBA Drought Disaster Loans

Small, non-farm businesses in Fremont, Custer, Chaffee, Pueblo, and 19 other Colorado counties are now eligible to apply for low interest disaster loans from the U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA).   Alfred E. Judd, Director of SBA’s Disaster Field Operations Center-West, announced that the loans are intended to offset economic losses because of reduced revenues caused by drought beginning January 1, 2011.

Commissioners Issue Invitation for Emergency Medical Review

The Fremont County Commissioners voted Tuesday to issue an invitation to the EMS and Trauma Division of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to perform a consultative evaluation of ambulance and emergency medical services in Fremont County.    The formal invitation is a follow up to a June 28th meeting at the Cañon City Main Fire Station at which Sean Caffrey, the state’s EMS System Development Coordinator explained the purpose of the program.   The service is offered by the state at no charge to counties to thoroughly evaluate every agency and a

Fremont Child Support Enforcement Unit Lauded

The Fremont County Department of Human Services Child Support Enforcement team has been honored by the State of Colorado for meeting and exceeding performance goals for child support enforcement in 2010.    John Bernhart, Director of the Colorado Department of Human Services Child Enforcement Unit, presented a Certificate of Excellence to the Fremont County Child Support Team at the monthly meeting of the Fremont County Board of Human Services.     Bernhart congratulated Wanda Embry and her co-workers for exceeding performance goals in four primary categor

Human Services Fraud Investigator Honored

The fraud investigator for the Fremont County Department of Human Services has been honored by the Colorado Welfare Fraud Council as the state’s top fraud investigator.   Shelley Poole of Cañon City was honored at the recent Colorado Welfare Fraud Training Conference held in Loveland.   Poole was presented with both the Outstanding Individual of the Year Award and the Ted Cole Memorial Award.   The Ted Cole Memorial is the most prestigious award handed out by the Welfare Fraud Council.
