Over the River Permit Decision Postponed Again

After a three hour marathon discussion Tuesday afternoon between the Fremont County Commissioners and the Over the River team, sorting out language to proposed conditions for a temporary use permit for the Over the River art project,  it appeared a document might be ready for the Commissioners formal consideration at their March 13th board meeting.   But after communication between attorneys the past two days, the Board of Commissioners learned Thursday afternoon that a document will not be ready for consideration by Tuesday’s board meeting.

Over the River Application Tabled Again

The Fremont County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday voted to table any action on the ‘Over the River’ temporary use permit application until the board’s regular meeting on March 13th.   Commission Chair Debbie Bell said the board is working hard to reach a resolution.    She said as they prepare to make a decision, the board is carefully reviewing language of the permit, particularly as it relates to conditions and findings listed.   Bell said it’s important for citizens to understand that the Board of Commissioners listened to them and took their concern

Vital Records Office Moves to Public Health March 1st

The Fremont County Public Health Agency (FCPHA) assumes responsibilities this week for the local Vital Records Office for Fremont County.   Effective March 1st the Public Health Agency, located in the Social Services Building at 172 Justice Center Road in Cañon City, officially assumes the duties of registering and issuing vital records for Fremont County serving as the official link with the Colorado Department of Public Health.

Commissioners Anticipate Further Delay for OTR Permit Decision

Although the Fremont County Board of Commissioners tabled consideration of a Temporary Use Permit for the artist Christo’s proposed ‘Over the River’ (OTR) project until their February 28th board meeting, the Board has now announced that the matter is expected to be tabled again to one of the board meetings in March.     The Board of Commissioners was informed this past Tuesday by the OTR planning team that they will now seek an extension of all federal, state, and local permits so that the river exhibition period would occur in August of 2015 instead of 2014.  

Commissioners Adopt New Precinct Maps for 2012 Election

The Fremont County Board of Commissioners Tuesday adopted a new set of precinct maps in preparation for the 2012 primary and general elections.   The maps reflect changes brought about by redistricting in which House District 21 (Representative Bob Gardner) will be eliminated from Fremont County.   That will leave the county split between House Districts 47 & 60.    District 47 will primarily encompass the Florence and Penrose areas.   The redistricting thus forced changes to eleven Fremont County voting precincts.   They include pr

Commissioners Adopt Zoning Amendment to Ease Burden on Developers

The Fremont County Board of Commissioners has adopted changes to the county’s Zoning Resolution intended to clarify requirements of commercial developers and to make the process of zone changes and business development easier and hopefully less costly.  The action was taken at the Board’s regular meeting on January 24th.    Work on the 4th Amendment to the Zoning Resolution began in 2011 after a Cañon City ad-hoc committee took their concerns about burdensome development regulations to the Board of Commissioners and the Cañon City Council.

Tourism Council Awards Funding

The Fremont County Tourism Council has awarded $6,000 to eight organizations to promote events that will bring visitors to the area. The grants are a part of the council’s mission to increase tourism to benefit the entire county.

OTR Hearing Guidelines Set

Guidelines and procedures for the upcoming public hearing on the Over the River project were set by the Fremont County Commissioners during a regular work session Jan. 25.

“We are determined to listen to everyone who wishes to speak,” said Debbie Bell, board chairman. “However, we will insist that speakers and attendees maintain appropriate decorum and respect at all times.”
