Tourism Council Accepting Community Event Grant Applications

The Fremont County Tourism Council is accepting applications from community organizations for 2011 tourism funding allocations.   Community organizations and non-profit groups that conduct special events which attract tourists and visitors to the area are invited to submit applications for funding assistance.   The Tourism Council by-laws require that at least five percent of Fremont County lodging tax revenues each year be distributed to community groups to support their special events.   The total amount of money to be distributed will be determined by the To

Mixed Revenue Picture for 2011 County Budget Preparations

The Fremont County Commissioners are getting mixed signals in 2010 sales and use tax collections as the board continues preparations for the 2011 county budget.   County Manager George Sugars reported to the Commissioners last week that the total sales and use tax collections for the first three quarters of 2010 amounted to $3.33 million.   That was $72,000 or 2.2 percent above the same period from 2009.   Sugars notes however that it is only 1.8 percent above the revenues budgeted for 2010.

Commissioners Continue Hearings on Zoning Amendments

In an effort to permit more time for public review and comment the Fremont County Commissioners Tuesday continued a pair of public hearings on amendments to the County Zoning Resolution dealing with contractor’s yards and small wind energy systems.     The Commissioners said they wanted to make sure contractors had an opportunity to read the new regulations and to appear at a public hearing to make any comments. 

Commissioners Table Decision on Black Range Permit

The Fremont County Commissioners Tuesday tabled for a second time a decision on an application by Black Range Minerals (BRM) for an amendment to their conditional use permit that would allow an expanded area for uranium exploration in the Tallahassee area northwest of Cañon City.

Following another five hour public hearing the Commissioners decided to table any decision until their November 9th regular meeting.    The Board also agreed to take additional written comment on the issue until their October 12th regular meeting.

Commissioners Join in Opposition to Ams. 60 & 61 and Prop. 101

The Fremont County Commissioners have approved a resolution stating unanimous opposition to proposed Amendments 60 & 61 and Proposition 101 on the Colorado November ballot.   The Commissioners join with the Cañon City Council, the Florence City Council, and a number of other local government and special district boards to approve resolutions in opposition to the ballot measures.   

Black Range Uranium Exploration Expansion Tabled

The Fremont County Commissioners tabled a decision at their September 14th regular meeting on a request by Black Range Minerals to expand the acreage for uranium exploration in the Tallahassee area northwest of Cañon City.    The Commissioners heard more than three hours of testimony during the public hearing.   Black Range Minerals is seeking to amend their original permit for uranium exploration which covered 8,169 acres on the Taylor Ranch to also include 2,210 acres on the neighboring South T-Bar Ranch properties.    The Fremont County Planning Co

F-4 Jet Renovated at Airport Memorial Park

12th Tactical Fighter Wing F-4 Phantom

The F-4 Phantom jet on display at the Leo Sidney Bost on War Memorial Park at the Fremont County Airport was recently renovated just in time for the reunion of the 12th Tactical Fighter Wing on August 29th.   E.J. Sherwood of Mesa, Arizona, a member of the 12th Tactical Wing, noticed two years ago that the F-4 jet needed some paint and restoration work.
