The Fremont County Board of Commissioners approved a pair of Temporary Use Permits for community fundraisers at their April 22nd board meeting. The permits highlighted a brief agenda of business for the Commissioners’ regular meeting.
The Commissioners approved a permit for the Penrose VFW Post 2788 to host a Street Dance and Bazaar on Broadway in front of the VFW on Saturday, May 17th. VFW organizers said the event will pay tribute to Armed Forces Day with games for kids, craft and food vendors, a flea market, an outdoor beer tent, and a street dance that night.
The Commissioners also approved a permit for the Deer Mountain Community Organization to conduct community markets on a series of dates from May through September. The organization plans a total of 24 dates with flea markets, bake sales, farmers’ markets, and holiday fairs on the group’s property at 2995 County Road 27A in the Colorado Acres area. The group hopes to raise enough money over time to build a new community center in the Deer Mountain area.
The Commissioners also took time during the April 22nd meeting to proclaim May as Foster Care Month in Fremont County. Stacie Kwitek-Russell of the Department of Human Services reported that the Department currently has 88 children placed in foster care placements. She said the Department has 12 certified foster care homes in Fremont County which house 19 children plus 25 kinship homes. But she said those numbers don’t come close to fulfilling the demand for foster care homes in the county. Kwitek-Russell said 32 Fremont County children are currently placed in foster care homes outside of Fremont County. A principle focus of Foster Care Month is to recruit more foster care families locally in Fremont County. Families interested in learning how to qualify as a foster care home should contact the Fremont County Department of Human Services.
In other business at the April 22nd Board meeting the Commissioners:
- Received an annual report from the John C. Fremont Library District in Florence. Tabby Selakovich reported that the library has registered 558 new library patrons for a total of 5,219 library patrons currently being served. She said the library houses 29,435 books and 25,344 pieces of other media;
- Heard a report from County Finance and Budget Director Sunny Bryant who said retail sales collections in Fremont County for January and February lagged behind the levels of one year ago by about $5,000. However Auto Sales Use Tax collections were up by $29,000 for the first quarter and Construction Use Tax was up by $42,000 over 2013 levels. The Construction Use Tax increase is due primarily to reconstruction at the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park;
- Adopted a proclamation recognizing April 30th as the 125th Anniversary of the Sons of the American Revolution organization.
