May 10th Board of Commissioners Meeting

May 10th Board of Commissioners Meeting

The Board of Commissioners honor Mike Schobrich for his 13 years of service on the Fremont County Planning Commission

The Fremont County Commissioners handled a brief agenda of business for Tuesday’s regular meeting.   The board honored Mike Schnobrich of Penrose for his 13 years of service on the Fremont County Planning Commission.    The Board of Commissioners recently approved the appointment of two new members to the Planning Commission replacing Schnobrich and Herm Lateer of Cañon City.   Commission Chairman Ed Norden said Schnobrich lent an extensive amount of leadership and experience to discussion on applications and planning issues over those 13 years.   Norden said it was one of the longer terms served on the Fremont County Planning Commission in recent memory.   The commissioners presented Schnobrich with an etched piece of crystal noting his years of service.

Carol McNew and Peggy Sorenson, members of the Fremont Heritage Commission, appeared before the commissioners portraying the characters of historical spirits from Fremont County’s past.   The Heritage Commission asked the Board of Commissioners to issue a formal proclamation recognizing 2011 as the Sesquicentennial Celebration of Fremont County’s heritage.   Fremont is one of 17 Colorado Counties to observe its’ 150th birthday this year.    As a follow up to the proclamation being issued the Board of Commissioners approved a resolution expanding the membership of the Heritage Commission from seven members to nine members.     The commissioners then voted to appoint two new members and a third member to fill a current vacancy.    The appointments went to Dorothy Cool, Paula Peterson, and Margaret Storm.    Commissioner Debbie Bell commended the Heritage Commission for their ongoing efforts in 2011 to celebrate the county's sesquicentennial.

The commissioners also voted to sign a letter of support for the Fremont Economic Development Corporation in their efforts to study ways to save the Clark Power Plant at the west edge of Cañon City.    The commission’s letter voices support for FEDC’s effort to explore use of alternative fuels at the power plant that would be environmentally friendly, protect jobs in the community, and protect local consumers from steep increases in electrical rates.

The commissioners on Tuesday also:

  • Approved a new one year contract with CHM Medical Corporation to provide inmate medical services at the Fremont County Detention Center;
  • Approved renewal of a 3.2 beer license for Kwik Stop #6 at Highway 50 & Dozier in Cañon City and waive the late filing issue;
  • Voted to continue a public hearing until May 24th for a special review use permit for Steve and Lynette Harris to operate an off-road ATV and dirt bike track on the northwest corner of County Roads 67 and 123 north of the Fremont County Airport.
