The Fremont Community Foundation's Annual Holy Smoke Barbecue Competition is among local agencies benefitting from Tourism Council Community Promotion Grants
The Fremont County Tourism Council has awarded $7,000 to 12 local organizations to promote events that will bring visitors to Fremont County. The grants are a part of the council’s mission to increase tourism to benefit the entire county.
Recipients of the grants and the award amounts are:
- Cañon City Parks and Recreation District, WKRP Whitewater Festival, $750
- Cañon City Swim Team, State Meet, $750
- Fremont Community Foundation, Holy Smoke and Flashback on Main Street, $750
- Starpoint, Rim to Rim 10K/5K Race, $750
- Fremont Adventure Recreation, Bikes and Brews, $750
- Cañon City Rodeo Association, Rodeo Events, $500
- Florence Arts Council, “Paint the Town,” $500
- Florence Eureka Days, $500
- Fremont Center for the Arts, Thomas Kincade Exhibit, $500
- Fremont Center for the Arts, 9th Annual Brew Ha Ha, $500
- Frog Dawg Productions, The Americana Music and Art Festival, $500
- Fremont County Heritage Commission, Spirits of the Past Booklet, $250
This year the Tourism Council received applications from 17 organizations for funding assistance totaling $15,500. In 2012, 11 organizations applied for funding from the FCTC. Application requests totaled $11,650, and eight organizations received a portion of the $6,000 awarded a year ago.
The funds are from the county’s voter-approved lodging tax and are awarded to local organizations to help promote specific events. FCTC bylaws require the seven-member council to grant a minimum of 5 percent of the proceeds from the county’s 2 percent lodging tax each year.
