Commissioners Vacate Two County Roads Leading to Ranch Properties

An effort by the Fremont County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) to address issues with overhead ranch signs installed across county roadways reached another conclusion Tuesday when the Board of Commissioners voted to formally vacate a pair of county road rights of way northwest of Cañon City that lead into private ranches.    The Commissioners voted to vacate County Road 9A leading from County Road 2 onto the Taylor Ranch property and to vacate County Road F5 leading from County Road 2 onto state school land and the Stirrup Ranch.   The 9A road will now become

Elected Officials Host Annual Hot Dog Cookout

Administration Building and Department of Transportation employees enjoy hot dogs on the north lawn of the Administration Building on August 22nd. County Seeks to Save $$$ on Certificate Refinancing

The Fremont County Board of Commissioners has approved a resolution to refinance certificates of participation which will lower the interest rate and save the county money.   Fremont County Commission Chair Debbie Bell said the board had been in discussions since last spring with the George K. Baum Company considering various refinance options for the county’s outstanding certificates of participation used to finance county facility projects over the years.

Planning Commission to Consider Vacating Two Ranch Roads

The Fremont County Planning Commission will consider vacating two segments of county road in northwestern Fremont County at Tuesday’s monthly meeting.   The two segments of road proposed to be vacated and dropped from maintenance by the Fremont County Department of Transportation both serve as entry roads to a pair of ranches off of County Road 2 in the Tallahassee area.

Letters of Interest Sought for Tourism Council Vacancy

The Fremont County Board of Commissioners is soliciting letters of interest from Fremont County residents for to fill a vacancy on the Fremont County Tourism Council.   The Tourism Council develops and administers a Tourism Marketing Plan for Fremont County utilizing the proceeds from the Fremont County Lodging Tax.

The position will complete a three-year term ending Jan. 1, 2015. Dorothy Day of the Royal Gorge Bridge, who had filled the seat since 2009, recently resigned from the board.

Rabid Bat Found in Cañon City

A bat found at the Cañon City Public Library at 516 Macon Avenue on August 1st has tested positive for rabies.   The Fremont County Public Health Agency (FCPHA) is asking anyone who had direct contact with the rabid bat to notify them at 275-1626 and to immediately contact their health care provider about the possible need for rabies post-exposure treatment.

Fremont County Woman is Colorado’s First 2012 West Nile Virus Case

A Fremont County woman has been positively identified as Colorado’s first human case of West Nile Virus (WNV) for 2012.   The 59-year-old woman was hospitalized earlier this month after showing symptoms but has been discharged and is recovering at home.    “West Nile Virus is a serious illness and we want to ensure citizens understand the potential risk associated with WNV infection,” said Fremont County Public Health Director Carla Dionne. “Late July through early September are when most human cases of West Nile Virus have been reported in Colorado.”
