Commissioners O-K Grant Contract for Florence Public Health Clinic

The Fremont County Board of Commissioners Tuesday voted to authorize the Chairman’s signature on a contract with the Caring for Colorado Foundation to accept a grant to help develop a public health clinic in Florence.  Fremont County Public Health Director Carla Dionne said the $30,540 grant will be used to supplement a $50,000 grant from the Colorado Department of Public Health to develop a clinic in the Florence Municipal Building.   Dionne said the clinic will focus on health services for young people from birth through age 25.    She said the Caring for Col

Horse in Upper Beaver Creek Diagnosed with West Nile Virus

A case of the mosquito-borne disease, West Nile Virus, has been confirmed in a horse from the Beaver Creek Drainage area of Fremont County.    “Animal vaccination is a primary key to preventing the spread of West Nile virus among animals,” said Carla Dionne, Director of the Fremont County Public Health Agency.    Dionne urged all horse owners to consult their veterinarians about proper and timely West Nile Virus vaccinations for their animals.   In 2011, 59 equine WNV infections were reported statewide.

Commissioners Approve Sale of Sr. Center to Penrose Seniors

An effort by the Penrose Senior Citizens Club to take over sole ownership of the Penrose Senior Center from Fremont County came to a successful conclusion Tuesday when the Fremont County Board of Commissioners approved a sales agreement with the club.  The Penrose Senior Citizens Club had been trying for more than 30 years to secure ownership of the building at 405 Broadway in Penrose.   In recent years the club had pressed the Board of Commissioners to donate the building.   That was apparently the intent of the Board of Commissioners in the late 70’s but a transac

Sheriff Reduces Fire Ban to Stage 1

Fremont County Sheriff Jim Beicker announced that effective at 12 noon last Friday, the fire ban across unincorporated areas of Fremont County was reduced from Stage 2 to Stage 1 fire restrictions.   Sheriff Beicker said the decision to lower to Stage 1 fire restrictions came as the result of other agencies and neighboring counties reducing their fire restrictions in light of recent monsoon rains.

Planning Commission Conducting Master Plan Survey

The Fremont County Planning Commission invites you to take a few minutes and help them plan for Fremont County’s future. The Planning Commission is currently in review of the County Master Plan Document, with the intention of an update to the document. The Commission has put together a checkbox survey that focuses on quality of life, neighborhood compatibility and visionary land use issues they feel could impact Fremont County over the next twenty years. The Commission wants the citizen’s input on these issues, so if you have the time for Fremont County’s future, please participate.

Water Usage in County Road Maintenance

While recent rain storms will go a long ways towards assisting road crews with maintenance of county roads, the Fremont County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) still relies heavily on the use of water trucks for routine maintenance.    Spring and summer drought conditions and recent emphasis on water conservation due to lower river levels have prompted several calls by citizens to the Department of Transportation Office questioning the use of water trucks on county roads.

Commissioners Adopt New Fire Ban Ordinance

The Fremont County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a rewrite of the county’s fire ban ordinance just in time to deal with the question of fireworks in Fremont County.    At the Board’s June 26th regular meeting the commissioners adopted the fire ban ordinance on second reading.   Fremont County Sheriff Jim Beicker had explained at the June 12th public hearing that the rewrite was intended to have restrictions that fall in line with other state and federal agencies thereby reducing confusion for citizens.

Fremont Road Crews Set to Start Chip Seal Work

Fremont County motorists will encounter delays or road closures in the coming weeks as the Fremont County Department of Transportation conducts chip sealing operations on county roads.   County road crews will conduct oil and chip sealing on a 1 mile section of road on ‘K’ Street in Penrose on Monday, June 25th.    Motorists will experience delays in the work zone.
