Fremont Road Crews Set to Start Chip Seal Work

Fremont County motorists will encounter delays or road closures in the coming weeks as the Fremont County Department of Transportation conducts chip sealing operations on county roads.   County road crews will conduct oil and chip sealing on a 1 mile section of road on ‘K’ Street in Penrose on Monday, June 25th.    Motorists will experience delays in the work zone.

On Tuesday, June 26th, a section of Central and Dozier Avenues on the north side of Cañon City will be closed to all traffic.    Central and Dozier will be closed between Drake Street and Utility Drive from 6:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Tuesday for chip seal work.    No through traffic will be allowed and motorists should use an alternate route.    On Wednesday, June 27th crews will be working with the City of Florence to chip seal Frazier Avenue between County Road 13A and Main Street in Florence.   Motorists should also seek an alternate route on Wednesday to avoid the work on Frazier.

Other chip seal projects scheduled in July include another 2 miles of work on County Road 28 - -Copper Gulch Road southwest of Cañon City, 1 mile on County Road 1A south of Cotopaxi, 1 mile on County Road 12 north of Cotopaxi, and 1.7 miles of chip seal on County Road 27A which is the southern portion of Copper Gulch Road.

The county is spending $217,000 this summer on the 7.6 miles of chip seal work amounting to a cost of $28,500 per mile.   That compares to a cost of $107,000 per square mile of new asphalt paving.   The only asphalt paving the county is doing this summer is three-quarters of a mile of surface on Drake and Elizabeth Streets north of Cañon City.   County road crews completed application of dust suppressant on 70 miles of county roadway this spring at a total cost of $75,883 for materials.
