The Fremont County Tourism Council has awarded $6,000 to eight organizations to promote events that will bring visitors to the area. The grants are a part of the council’s mission to increase tourism to benefit the entire county.
Recipients of the grants and the award amounts are:
- Cañon City Recreation and Park District / WKRP Whitewater Festival, $1,500
- Fremont Community Foundation Holy Smoke, $1,500
- Starpoint Rim-2-Rim Royal Gorge Run, $1,000
- Florence Chamber of Commerce Web site promotion, $500
- Florence Arts Council Paint the Town, $500
- Florence Eureka Days, $500
- Fremont County Heritage Commission heritage tourism, $250
- Museum of Colorado Prisons Historic Ghost Walk and Cemetery Crawl, $250
The Tourism Council received applications from 11 organizations for funding assistance totaling $11,650. The funds are from the county’s voter-approved lodging tax and are awarded to local organizations to help promote specific events. FCTC bylaws require the council to grant a minimum of 5 percent of the proceeds from the county’s 2 percent lodging tax each year.
