The Canon City Chamber of Commerce Prospectors joined with Colorado and Fremont County Human Service Officials and the Fremont County Commissioners in formally dedicating the new Southeast Regional Training Center along Justice Center Road in Canon City on Monday.

State and local officials gathered Monday at the Fremont County Department of Human Services (DHS) to formally dedicate the opening of a regional training center for social service workers in southeastern Colorado. The training center is located in a remodeled section of the Human Services building which used to house a day care center in the southeast corner of the building.
Judy Krow, Director of the Office of Children, Youth, and Families for the Colorado Department of Human Services, remarked that the department heard expressions of concern from across the state when employees were forced to travel to Douglas County to participate in training sessions at Colorado’s only training location at that time. Krow said the department decided that regional training centers would be a much better option.
The Fremont County Southeast Training Center has actually been in operation several months already. Fremont County DHS Director Steve Clifton said social service caseworkers from some 18 southeastern Colorado counties are served by the center.
Dr. Desmond Runyan, Executive Director of the Kempe Center for the Prevention and Treatment of child Abuse and Neglect at the University of Colorado, also took part in the dedication. Runyan has researched child abuse for over 32 years while maintaining a clinical practice evaluating possible child abuse victims and as a general pediatrics attending at UNC. He said the training center will help provide the training tools necessary for caseworkers who handle child welfare cases across the state.
