A plan by the Penrose Water District to construct an Arkansas River water diversion and pump water to the Penrose area will come before the Fremont County Planning Commission for a permit review at the Commission’s June 3rd monthly meeting.    The Penrose Water District is seeking approval of a Special Review Use permit to build a pump station and a raw water line from the Arkansas River to Brush Hollow Reservoir.

The plan proposes the drilling of shallow groundwater wells generally within 50 feet of the Arkansas River and either pumping the water to Brush Hollow or to the District’s water treatment plant.   The water would be pumped from the well field through a 12-inch diameter pipeline to an above ground storage tank located at the site of a booster pump station.    The pump station would then pump from the storage tank through another 12-inch pipeline into Brush Hollow Reservoir.

The diversion will begin at the pump station to be located southwest of Penrose with the pipeline then to be located in county road rights-of-way having to cross private property at Highways 50 and 115.   It would extend north along ‘C’ Street to County Road 123 and then north along ‘F’ Street to Brush Hollow.

The proposed pump station will consist of a 20 foot by 38 foot building located about 1,600 feet northwest of the well field.    The permitted property for the pump station will contain 100 acres.   The plan would allow the Penrose Water District to access the water rights on the Arkansas River that it obtained several years ago when water was purchased from a ranch at Howard.

The only other item on the Planning Commission’s agenda is continuation of a workshop on the Fremont County Master Plan.    The Commission meets at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3rd, in the lower level Commissioners’ meeting room in the Fremont County Administration Building.
